This is Climate: Seoul. Washington Post. June 8, 2023. Jeongmin Yoon, ESG Intern, Incheon National University.
On June 8, the Washington Post organized a discussion on climate change attended by South Korean Ambassador Cho Yoon-je and Professor Yoon Sun-jin. The event highlighted various aspects of climate change, including global cooperation, China's role, Korea's challenge, personal and collective action, and optimism through innovation. Participants discussed the need for regional and international cooperation, the importance of China's efforts on renewable energy, Korea's low share of renewable electricity, the importance of individual actions, and the role of technology and innovation in tackling climate change.
Climate change is an important issue that requires immediate attention and action. Like many other countries, Korea faces unique challenges in transitioning to a sustainable future. The low share of renewable energy in the national power mix is feared, which calls for urgent policy changes and increased investment in renewable technologies. It is encouraging that public awareness of climate change in Korea is relatively high, but awareness alone is not enough. It is important for individuals to translate this perception into concrete actions, such as adopting energy-efficient practices, supporting renewable energy companies, and pressuring policymakers to implement climate-friendly policies.
Global cooperation is essential to combat climate change, and countries like China play an important role in this effort. China's experience with large populations, economic growth, and air pollution offers valuable lessons and incentives to invest in renewable energy and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Cooperation with China and others is needed to comprehensively solve climate change.
As emphasized in the debate, Korea's successful response to ozone depletion demonstrates Korea's ability to innovate and adapt. Based on these experiences, it is important for Korea to continue to invest in technology and innovation to develop sustainable solutions to the challenges posed by climate change.
In conclusion, climate change is a global crisis that requires collective action at all levels. As a Korean, I think I have the potential to contribute greatly to responding to climate change by implementing strong policies, revitalizing renewable energy, encouraging individual actions, and fostering innovation. By working with other countries and taking decisive action toward a greener future, we can mitigate the impact of climate change and create a sustainable world for future generations.
